Various models and visions exist about the future of the internet – Tim Berners-Lee´s “Semantic Web” is one of these. So far no consensus exists if and how a semantic world wide web is going to evolve. During the last few years some technical standards have deployed mainly by industrial self-organisation and are being applied in various but highly specific domains. At the same time we experience a persisting trend in the adoption of semantic web standards by global IT corporations and the call for further standardization. The panel addresses the interwoven relationship between politics, economics and business on the way to a networked knowledge society and identifies options for design and agendas for action.

Unterschiedliche Modelle und Visionen existieren von der Zukunft des Internets - Tim Berners-Lees „Semantic Web" ist eine davon. Bisher herrscht weitgehend Uneinigkeit darüber, wie ein semantisches Internet der Zukunft Realität werden könnte. In den vergangenen Jahren haben sich einige technische Standards durch weitgehende industrielle Selbstorganisation durchgesetzt, kommen jedoch nur in sehr eingeschränkten Bereichen zum Einsatz. Gleichzeitig erleben wir einen anhaltenden Trend der breiten Adaption von Semantic Web Standards durch global agierende IT-Konzerne und den Ruf nach weiterführender Standardisierung. Der Halbtag thematisiert das Spannungsfeld zwischen Politik und Ökonomie auf dem Weg zur vernetzten Wissensgesellschaft und identifiziert Handlungsbedarf und Gestaltungsspielräume.

Google – the most popular search engine on the web – is gaining public attention with two highly debated projects: Google Print and Google Library. Publishers, third sector industries and artists fear the Google-colonisation of the worldwide digital cultural heritage and gather in media effective oppositional communities to hold against Google´s market power.
The panel addresses the questions what exactly is the background of Google´s digitisation projects, which objections do exist from the perspectives of the Google sceptics and if an European alternative to Google´s projects is a realistic option.

Das Panel stellt die Frage, was genau hinter den Projekten von Google steckt, welche Einwände von Seiten der Google-Skeptiker existieren und ob eine europäische Alternative zu Googles Kulturprojekten eine realistische Option ist.
